I wouldn't completely rule out summer jobs and the like. In addition to helping my father and his dental practice, me and my siblings worked at a local fun center, and I think it was good to for us to have have an early job that wasn't based on nepotism or personal favors.

Also, the last time at my parents for Thanksgiving, my Dad and I went to check out a new burger place that had just opened. The entire staff seemed to consist of high school kids from the same class. We were both impressed with how every station had someone running it, and how efficient and well-coordinated they all were. I'd say that forging working relationships with their peers in a job that, while simple, still requires dedication and skill, is good village building.
